Greenwich Good News!

A Newsletter from Greenwich Presbyterian Church

Celebrating God’s love since 1707…

 December 2016

 A Note From Pastor Beth…

I am thrilled to tell you that recently GPC has made some changes to its schedule and programming that just may make us a little more family friendly!  Beginning in November, Sunday School for all ages moved from 11:15 a.m. to a new time of 9 a.m. It is our prayer that families will find it more convenient to get an early start to their day. Please think about bringing the whole family to Sunday School!

Also in November we had the first of what we hope will be many wonderful, wacky and worshipful Youth Group gatherings.  Four youth in grades 6-8 gathered for pizza and a pumpkin toss. We hope to be sending word soon of more gatherings in the New Year.

As many of you may have heard by now, I am leaving GPC to assume a pastoral position at a church just three miles from my home in Newark, DE.  It was not a decision I made lightly. I have loved being at GPC; I just did not love the long ride to get here! I see Greenwich Pres. as a congregation just bursting with good things for even more good people.  The church is lead by some very well-meaning elders and deacons and has a wonderful music program. It is less self-centered than I have heard it used to be and cautiously open to trying new things. The congregation is also developing an ever-increasing interest in community outreach and missions. The future is bright and I hope you will consider coming and being a part of it all. A pastor may help guide a church, but the congregation IS the church.  Come and see for yourself.

Blessings,

Pastor Beth

Christmas in Greenwich

Lots will be happening at GPC on Sunday, Dec. 11 as the community celebrates Christmas in Greenwich, from noon-5 p.m. The sanctuary will be open for historic tours and at times there will be live music to help set the mood! There will be an exhibit of dress clothes from days gone by titled, “Remember Your Church Clothes!” And in the kitchen, our chefs will be cooking up our famous homemade soups and chicken potpie, just $4 for a generous mug, with quart take-outs; also available beverages and desserts.

Calling All Angels, Shepherds, and Wise-People!

If you have a cute child or teen or an even cuter grandchild, please consider bringing them to church on Sunday, Dec. 18 at 9:45 a.m. to participate in our Children’s Christmas program.  This will be a no-fuss, no-muss, no-rehearsal extravaganza that is always heart-warming and uplifting.  Participants can gather in the vestibule to get into costume to participate in non-speaking walk-on parts in the nativity story.  Come join us and dress up like Mary, Joseph, an angel, a shepherd, a wise-person, a cow, or a sheep!  If you know a family with a young baby, we would love to have them all appear as the holy family!  Please see Barbara Wheaton or Pastor Beth if you have any questions.

Christmas Basket Collection

The Outreach Committee is collecting canned goods, other non-perishable items, and monetary donations for our Christmas baskets.  You can put items in the box in the vestibule and put monetary donations in the collection plate or give directly to Mary Bowen or Laura Sadtler.  Many thanks to all who donated to our Thanksgiving basket project.  With your help and support we could help seven families, nearly double the number we helped last year!  Supplies are now depleted and we need a quick turn-around for the Christmas baskets. Please see Mary or Laura if you can donate a turkey or a ham.

Many Thanks

Many thanks to everyone who contributed to the Operation Christmas Child Shoebox Project this year.  Your individual donations totaled up to 14 boxes brimming with special Christmas treats for needy children across the globe.  Thank you for your generosity and for making their Christmases a little brighter!  Special thanks to Ken Miller who coordinates this project!

Wreaths Across America

The Daughters of the American Revolution will have their annual Wreaths Across America ceremony on Saturday, Dec. 17 at noon.  Sarah Tarpine from the DAR and Jim Woodside VFW unit, will perform the ceremony of laying wreaths on the graves of the Revolutionary War, Tea Burner, and Civil War Veterans in the old cemetery across from the church.  Hope to see you there!

Christmas Joy Offering

This is a special offering that supports past, present and future leaders.  Fifty percent of undesignated receipts to the Christmas Joy Offering are distributed to the Board of Pensions for assistance programs that provide support to retired and active church workers, their spouses and families.  The other fifty percent supports Presbyterian-related racial ethnic schools and colleges through the Racial Ethnic and Women’s Ministries of the Presbyterian Mission Agency.  Please consider giving to this worthy cause.
